11/1/12 - Peter Gmoser - Canter Pirouette

canter pirouette, flying changes, half steps, counterflexion

Part 1: Peter Gmoser brings us a 9 year old Trakehner gelding that has competed in the small tour who has come to him for work on the canter pirouettes. He first looks for relaxation in the walk and trot while he explains the history with this horse and why he uses lungeing before riding with some horses.

Part 2: As he moves to the canter work, he is careful to make sure he gets an immediate response to the aids, particularly because of his training for the pirouettes. When the horse is not accepting the outside rein, he uses counterflexion. In the canter he asks that the horse be forward first, and then goes on to the work to prepare for the pirouette. He shows an excellent exercise for horses that may jump through with both hind legs in the pirouettes.

Part 3: Peter continues with the haunches in on a circle, asking the horse to collect and then go forward. He explains the use of the whip in this movement. The walk pirouette is used to improve the canter pirouette, and he demonstrates what to do when the horse leans on the inside leg. He works through some stiffness issues in the changes. As he rides the haunches in on a small circle, he asks for collection and then forward.

Part 4: When the horse allows him to change the bend in the canter without changing the canter and does single changes well, he moves on to the threes and twos. Peter asks for half steps in the trot with rhythm and suppleness at this stage in his training rather than piaffe.

Part 5: Peter demonstrates the walk, half step, trot transitions to keep the horse from anticipating the walk after the training half steps. He rides an excellent demonstration of a relaxed, elastic, responsive horse who is happy in his work.

Part 6: He returns to the flying changes, making the horse soft in both directions first. In preparation for the ones, he works on one twos. The session ends with a lovely stretchy trot.
